Israel's advancing plans to construct a major new illegal settlement that would divide the occupied West Bank in two have sparked widespread international condemnation. In a joint statement, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Canada, and Norway condemned Israel's opening of construction tenders for more than 1,200 housing units under the E1 settlement project as unacceptable and a violation of Palestinian territorial contiguity.
The nations warned of legal and reputational consequences for participants, urging Israel to immediately retract the plans and halt settlement expansion in the West Bank. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry also voiced complete rejection of the illegal settlement expansion, while Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that the actions gravely undermine prospects for a contiguous Palestinian homeland. Furthermore, United Nations spokesperson Stephane Dujarric expressed deep alarm over the new outposts and tenders.
The controversial project aims to connect occupied East Jerusalem to the Maale Adumim settlement area, bisecting the West Bank and severing its link to East Jerusalem. Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich previously praised the E1 plan's approval, while human rights organizations warn of surging Palestinian displacement driven by rising settler attacks and settlement growth in the occupied territory.
