Aston Villa Football Club has announced its intention to pursue legal action against prominent football pundit Jamie Carragher. The club accuses the former Liverpool defender of making "unacceptable insults" directed at both the club and its fanbase.

The decision by Aston Villa comes in response to comments made by Carragher on the 'Stick to Football' podcast. During the podcast, Carragher told Villa supporters to "shut the [expletive] up" and stated, "Aston Villa will never be Manchester United," implying a perceived hierarchy within English football. Carragher elaborated on his point, suggesting that while clubs like Real Madrid might attract top players from Manchester United, and Liverpool holds a similar standing, there are indeed clubs below Aston Villa in this hierarchy. He further asserted that these lower-ranked clubs would be able to attract managers or players from Aston Villa, reiterating his "shut the f*** up Villa fans. Aston Villa will never be Man United" sentiment.

Carragher also touched upon the speculation surrounding Aston Villa manager Unai Emery's potential move to Manchester United, should Michael Carrick's position at Old Trafford become untenable following the team's poor start to the season.

Aston Villa chairman Nassef Sawiris confirmed the club's stance, stating, "Aston Villa will initiate legal action against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable insults about the club and its fans." He added, "Aston Villa will not allow anyone to stop our ascension in English and European football." The specific legal grounds for the action have not yet been disclosed by the club.

Both Carragher and Aston Villa did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Reuters regarding the impending legal action. Carragher has since attempted to de-escalate the situation, claiming his remarks were made in jest. He explained on social media that the comments were a reaction to criticism from Villa fans regarding his suggestion that Emery might be interested in managing Manchester United. Carragher also shared clips intended to show his consistent praise for Emery and Aston Villa, including his satisfaction with their victory in the 2026 Europa League final in Istanbul.

Carragher further emphasized that his comments were meant to highlight his high regard for Unai Emery, whom he considers one of the Premier League's top managers, rather than to disparage Aston Villa.
