West Indies secured a commanding eight-wicket victory against Bangladesh in the first Test, taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Brandon King was the star performer, smashing a career-best 81 not out to guide the visitors to their target on day four in Mirpur. King's unbeaten 115-ball innings featured 10 fours and a six, as West Indies successfully chased down 170 in 35.1 overs.
The win was underpinned by an exceptional bowling performance from Jomel Warrican, who was named player of the match. Warrican claimed 4-63 in the second innings, adding to his first-innings five-wicket haul, as Bangladesh was dismissed for 142. West Indies captain Roston Chase also contributed significantly with the ball, taking 5-36 in the second innings, marking his fifth five-wicket haul in Test cricket.
"The guys were determined, even though we didn’t have a good start in the first innings," said Chase. "We lost the lead, but we were still determined to fight back and try to win the game, and that’s what we did."
Bangladesh, resuming the fourth day at 79-6 with a 106-run lead, saw their hopes of setting a challenging target diminish with early wickets. Jaker Ali's 22 was the second-highest score for Bangladesh in the innings. Nayeem Hasan offered some resistance, scoring a maiden Test half-century (52 off 91 balls), but his efforts were not enough as Bangladesh was bowled out in 48.4 overs.
Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto acknowledged the team's shortcomings. "All three departments didn’t do well, especially in the field. These things can happen sometimes, but I believe the intention and preparation were quite good," he stated. "Going forward, we need to look at those areas and work out how we can do better in these conditions."
West Indies began their chase confidently, with openers King and John Campbell reaching 64 without loss before rain and bad light caused delays. Despite a dropped catch on 70, King remained composed to guide West Indies home. Campbell narrowly missed a half-century, falling for 49 off 55 balls to Shoriful Islam. This victory continues West Indies' positive momentum, following their recent performances against India.
The second Test is scheduled to be played in Sylhet from November 5.
