Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has described a United States initiative to open dialogue with Tehran as a "positive step." However, he clarified that there are currently no plans for direct meetings with US officials.
Speaking to Al Jazeera on Saturday, Araghchi stated that Iran has reviewed a letter from US Vice President JD Vance during high-level meetings. He also outlined Tehran's conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, suggesting this could lead to renewed negotiations with Washington. An Iranian delegation has reportedly traveled to Doha, following a visit by Qatari mediators to Tehran aimed at potentially reviving the US-Iran ceasefire.
Araghchi confirmed that one of his aides is in Qatar for ongoing consultations. "The American side’s attempt to open the door to dialogue and understanding more broadly is a positive step," he told Al Jazeera. He cautioned, however, "If Washington’s goal in sending this letter is to stir up discord, it would be yet another mistake to add to its previous ones."
Regarding potential meetings, Araghchi downplayed speculation, stating, "We see no need to meet with the Americans at this stage. Our conditions are clear, and mediators are continuing their consultations regarding them." He indicated that the nature of any talks, direct or indirect, would hinge on Tehran's conditions being met. "Mediators have presented proposals concerning the nuclear dossier, which we are currently reviewing as part of the second phase," he added.
Araghchi also mentioned that Qatari and Pakistani mediators are actively engaged in consultations concerning Iran's conditions. He elaborated on the Strait of Hormuz negotiations, noting that discussions with Qatari mediators have expedited the process for implementing Iran's proposal to reopen the waterway. "The Qatari side proposed shortening the implementation period of the Iranian proposal to five days. We have reached a proposal at this stage that reduces the implementation period to two days," he said.
The conditions set by Iran include the lifting of sanctions imposed after the Islamabad memorandum, a reduction of US forces in the region, the restoration of oil waivers, and the release of all frozen funds, including those held in Qatar. Iran is also seeking recognition of shipping routes through the strait, as previously discussed with Oman, and the closure of other routes.
In a separate statement, Araghchi affirmed Iran's readiness for various eventualities, stating, "We are prepared for all scenarios." He added, "We have upgraded our weaponry, addressed our vulnerabilities, and tested new arms. Our forces are at the highest level of readiness."
