Pakistan's emerging all-rounder, Arafat Minhas, demonstrated his exceptional skills in the recent tri-nation One-Day International (ODI) cricket series. In the final against Sri Lanka in Lahore, with Pakistan struggling at 125-5 and needing 125 runs off 79 balls, the 21-year-old Minhas entered the fray. Facing the pressure at the Gaddafi Stadium, he partnered with Hasan Nawaz to stabilize the innings. Despite going wicketless earlier, Minhas showed remarkable composure, turning the tide of the match. A pivotal moment came when he hit a six off Dasun Shanaka with Pakistan needing 39 from 27 balls, reigniting the home crowd's hope. He went on to score 61 runs off just 31 balls, including five sixes, leading Pakistan to a trophy win and earning himself the player of the series award. His series performance included nine wickets and 149 runs, with two half-centuries.
Commentators lauded the promising talent, with Minhas himself stating he "enjoyed the pressure" and focused on believing in the team's ability to chase the target. Earlier in the series, Minhas delivered a stellar bowling performance against England in Rawalpindi on October 10. After contributing 59 runs to Pakistan's total of 302-9, he took six wickets for 40 runs, bowling England out for 215 and securing an 87-run victory. His spell included the wicket of Harry Brook. Former England captain Nasser Hussain praised Minhas, noting his all-round contribution of a half-century, six wickets, and a run-out, highlighting him as a cricketer in demand. This performance placed him alongside legends Shahid Afridi and Abdul Razzaq as the third Pakistani to achieve a half-century and take at least five wickets in an ODI. On his ODI debut against Australia in May, Minhas took 5-32, becoming the first Pakistani to achieve a five-wicket haul on debut and also winning the player of the series award. He prefers to be known as a 'complete all-rounder' rather than specializing in batting or bowling.
Minhas's journey began with a dream of fast bowling at age eight, but his father, Kashif, guided him towards left-arm spin. Kashif, who had his own cricketing aspirations cut short, invested heavily in his sons' development, even building a practice facility on their Multan rooftop during the COVID-19 lockdown to ensure uninterrupted training. Minhas progressed through Pakistan's age-group system, becoming a top under-16 player before joining the under-19 team. He played a crucial role in Pakistan's run to the semifinals of the ICC Under-19 World Cup in 2024. His consistent performances made his transition to the senior team a natural progression.
His younger brother, Sameer, a right-handed opening batter, has also made significant strides, earning a place in Pakistan's Test squad for the series against Sri Lanka in November after scoring 405 runs in his first-class debut season. The youngest brother, Abdullah, is also a budding cricketer. Minhas remains focused on continuous improvement, stating that the current achievements are not the final goal. Their father, Kashif, dreams of seeing all three sons play together for Pakistan and win an international trophy, fulfilling his own abandoned cricketing ambitions.
