Dutch authorities have successfully intercepted and rescued 38 individuals found adrift in a rubber boat off the Dutch coast. This marks one of the first such incidents for the Netherlands. Among those rescued, two are suspected of being smugglers, while the remaining 36 are identified as migrants. Military police spokesperson Doron Wallin informed The Associated Press that the origin and intended destination of the boat remain unknown, with possibilities including France, the Netherlands, or Belgium. The dinghy was discovered with no motor, drifting in the waters of the Netherlands’ Zeeland province, located far southwest of Amsterdam. Notably, none of the individuals on board were wearing life vests. All 38 individuals are men; 36 are from Afghanistan, and the two suspected smugglers are from Sudan, according to AFP news agency. The two Sudanese men have been arrested on suspicion of people smuggling. While the boat's destination is unclear, the incident occurs amidst a backdrop of frequent small boat crossings from France to the United Kingdom. However, such discoveries are unusual in Dutch waters. "These are things you usually see in France and Belgium. We rarely see it here in the Netherlands before today," Wallin stated. The Dutch authorities are set to launch an investigation into the matter on Sunday.
