Croatian police officers escorted Ukrainian national Volodymyr Zhuravlev, a professional diver suspected of involvement in the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline sabotage, towards an appearance at The County Court in Pula, Croatia on August 20, 2026. The real-life events mirror a Hollywood plot with an unexpected twist. Croatian authorities arrested the Ukrainian diver in connection with the 2022 bombing of the Nord Stream gas pipelines connecting Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea while he was working on the set of an upcoming film.
German media reported that Zhuravlev, a scuba diver, had been hired as a consultant for a movie titled Snake Island, which offers a dramatic reconstruction of the very bombings he is accused of helping carry out.
Zhuravlev is a Ukrainian citizen, professional scuba diver, and diving instructor, with some reports linking him to a Kyiv diving school. German prosecution filings sometimes refer to him as Vladimir Z to comply with local privacy laws. German authorities name him as a key suspect in the September 2022 Nord Stream pipeline bombing, though Zhuravlev denies any participation in the sabotage. After evading arrest in Poland in 2024 and fleeing back to Ukraine, a Polish court later refused to execute Germany's European arrest warrant, arguing that German authorities lacked jurisdiction and that the destruction of Nord Stream could be considered a justified defensive act by Ukraine. Poland has historically opposed the Nord Stream projects.
It remains unclear if local authorities were aware of Zhuravlev's presence in Croatia prior to his detention under the European arrest warrant. His defense attorneys are currently fighting his extradition to Germany. His Polish defense lawyer, Tymoteusz Paprocki, noted that a Croatian court hearing the case would effectively be ruling on a matter already decided in Poland, another European Union member state.
The Nord Stream explosions on September 26, 2022, severely damaged both the operational Nord Stream 1 and the unfinished Nord Stream 2 pipelines. Owned by Russia's Gazprom and costing approximately $11 billion, Nord Stream 2 ran from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea to double the capacity of the original route. While Berlin defended the project as purely commercial, it carried profound geopolitical weight by bypassing Ukraine and depriving Kyiv of transit fees. Following Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, the pipelines became symbols of European energy dependence on Moscow.
The blasts occurred in international waters within the exclusive economic zones of Denmark and Sweden, neither of which has assigned official responsibility. Although Denmark and Sweden closed their investigations in 2024, Germany continues its probe. Federal prosecutors in Germany charged a former Ukrainian army officer, Serhii K, in July of this year, alleging he acted on behalf of Ukrainian intelligence. Arrested in Italy in August 2025 and transferred to Germany that November, Serhii K allegedly led a team consisting of professional divers, a skipper, and an explosives expert. Prosecutors state the group used forged Ukrainian passports to enter Germany in September 2022, rented a yacht with fake identification, transported military-grade explosives to the seabed near the Danish island of Bornholm, and attached time fuses to the pipelines.
Zhuravlev's connection to Hollywood centers on his advisory role for Snake Island, being filmed in Zagreb, Croatia. The film is directed by Doug Liman, known for directing The Bourne Identity, Mr and Mrs Smith, and Edge of Tomorrow. Liman's fictional political thriller about the gas pipelines features Oscar winners Sean Penn and Adrien Brody in its cast, with Brody spotted at the shooting location where Zhuravlev was apprehended.
