The US Embassy in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia issued a security alert on Friday, October 30, highlighting potential security risks within the kingdom. The Embassy cautioned US citizens about the possibility of attacks targeting airports, which could result in airspace closures, flight cancellations, and significant travel disruptions.

As of October 23, the US Department of State has directed the departure of non-emergency US government personnel and their family members from Saudi Arabia due to these security concerns. The US mission indicated that the Iranian-backed Houthi group has engaged in hostile actions against Saudi Arabia, including attacks on civilian airports and critical infrastructure, leading to civilian casualties and substantial travel interruptions.

The embassy warned that these hostilities could escalate rapidly, potentially expanding beyond current affected areas and leading to broader security developments. Consequently, US government personnel operating in Saudi Arabia now require special authorization from the head of the US mission to use any airport within the kingdom, following recent missile and drone attacks on Saudi airports.

US citizens are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution if they choose to use Saudi airports. They should monitor their flight statuses directly with airlines and airports to stay informed about potential changes in departure times, flight cancellations, or airspace closures.
