Qatar has strongly condemned what it described as a "reckless and irresponsible" attack on the liquified natural gas (LNG) carrier, Al Mayeda, in the Arabian Gulf on Friday. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) issued a statement on Sunday, warning that such incidents pose significant threats to maritime security, regional stability, and global energy supplies.
The vessel, owned by Qatar Gas Transport Company Limited (Nakilat), was reportedly struck by unidentified objects while transiting the Arabian Gulf on the evening of October 30. Nakilat confirmed that no crew members sustained injuries and that the incident had no environmental impact. The Al Mayeda remains safe and operational, with the full extent of the impact currently under assessment.
In its statement posted on X, Qatar's MoFA described the attack as a dangerous act that jeopardizes the safety of maritime navigation and the security of worldwide energy provisions. The ministry asserted that the State of Qatar reserves the right to implement all necessary measures, in accordance with international law and the UN Charter, to protect its assets, safeguard its interests, and ensure the safety of its vessels and crews.
MoFA further cautioned that such actions could lead to severe repercussions for regional security and stability, as well as the global economy. The potential environmental risks associated with targeting energy carriers, including threats to marine ecosystems and water security across the region, were also highlighted.
The relevant authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident and identify those responsible.
