Sultan Haitham has issued a decree that could lead to a three-year prison sentence for anyone found to be insulting Oman's national anthem. This new penalty for disrespecting the anthem, 'Salute to the Sultan,' aligns it with the punishment for insulting the country's flag.

The decree, published on Sunday, specifies that the offense includes any act that "desecrates the anthem verbally, in writing, by gesturing, by distorting it, or by committing any other act that conveys hatred or contempt." Individuals found guilty face imprisonment ranging from a minimum of three months to a maximum of three years.

This penalty mirrors the existing punishment for actions such as lowering or destroying Oman's flag, or conveying "hatred or contempt" for the flag or emblem. The decree does not provide a specific reason for this intensified crackdown.

Oman is not alone in enacting such laws. France introduced fines in 2003 for booing its national anthem, 'La Marseillaise.' More recently, in 2020, Hong Kong implemented prison sentences of up to three years for insulting China's anthem, 'March of the Volunteers.' In 2023, a man received the first prison sentence under this law for mixing the anthem with a protest song.

Oman's 'Salute to The Sultan' was originally composed in 1932. It underwent revisions in 1970 following Sultan Qaboos's ascension to power and again in 2020 upon the succession of Sultan Haitham.
