The U.S. State Department has greenlit a potential $4.5bn sale of up to four KC-46A aerial refuelling aircraft and related military equipment to Qatar, as announced by the U.S. Department of State on Thursday. Written by Eman Hawi on August 21, 2026, the agreement is structured to significantly enhance the operational reach and aerial refuelling capabilities of the Qatar Emiri Air Force.
This proposed acquisition equips the Qatar Emiri Air Force with dedicated refuelling assets, ensuring combat aircraft can sustain longer flights and cover greater operational distances. According to the U.S. Department of State, the transaction bolsters Qatar's defense readiness against current and future threats, improves interoperability alongside U.S. and allied forces, and solidifies the nation's strategic position in regional security.
Under the agreement, the package features up to four KC-46A aircraft accompanied by eight Pratt & Whitney PW4062 turbofan engines—split evenly between installed powerplants and spare units. Additional hardware includes 10 AN/ALR-69A radar warning receivers, 15 Guardian Laser Transmitter Assemblies for Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasure (LAIRCM) systems, and eight LAIRCM system processor replacements. Comprehensive logistical backing, missile-warning sensors, Identification Friend or Foe systems, navigation tools, spare parts, training hardware, and technical documents are also part of the arrangement.
Qatar holds the status of a U.S. Major Non-NATO Ally designated since 2022 and hosts Al Udeid Air Base, one of the premier American military installations in the Middle East and the home of the Combined Air Operations Center overseeing air operations throughout the U.S. Central Command region. Key contractors driving the deal comprise Boeing, Pratt & Whitney, RTX Corporation, and Northrop Grumman, with the U.S. State Department confirming that execution will not necessitate deploying extra U.S. government or contractor personnel to Qatar.
