Mehdi Taremi expressed that he was simply fulfilling his duties after guiding Al Wasl to their inaugural victory in a disrupted AFC Champions League Elite campaign. The Iranian striker opened the scoring and was subsequently named player of the match in their thrilling 4-3 triumph over Al Quwa Al Jawiya at Zabeel Stadium. This win propels the Dubai-based team off the bottom of the 16-team standings, as they now aim to secure a spot in the knockout stages.

Despite Al Wasl's strong position in the UAE Pro League, they have encountered difficulties in Asia's premier competition, contrasting with the success of other Emirati clubs. Al Ain, for instance, continued their remarkable unbeaten run with a commanding 4-1 victory against Saudi Pro League powerhouse Al Ittihad in Jeddah. Likewise, Al Wasl's city rivals, Shabab Al Ahli, boast a perfect record heading into their match against Al Hilal in Riyadh.

Beyond their on-field struggles, Al Wasl has also grappled with logistical hurdles. Their prior fixture against Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr was postponed due to travel complications related to their journey to Riyadh. Consequently, Al Wasl had not participated in a competitive match for 11 days before facing the Iraqi air force team on Monday evening. This extended break may have contributed to their inconsistent performance, as they missed numerous scoring opportunities and were fortunate not to concede an equalizer, highlighting defensive frailties.

Given the circumstances, Taremi's standout performance was perhaps anticipated. The former Inter Milan and Porto striker, who previously navigated significant challenges with the Iran national team at the World Cup in the United States, commented on his approach to adversity: "During the World Cup, we answered a lot of these questions; that's my job, I'm a football player. If we go [for a fixture], I'm going to play. If not, I stay here and train for the next game. The situation is not under my control."

Following Taremi's opening goal, Nicolas Gimenez, the UAE national team's playmaker, added two goals, and Pedro Malheiro contributed one, bringing Al Wasl's total to four. However, their defense remained vulnerable, and they narrowly avoided conceding a late equalizer.

"It was a tough game, as we expected," Taremi stated. "From the organisation of the defence, we had some problems. For the offensive, I think we did a great job. We could have scored more goals. We are happy about the three points, but we have to solve some problems."

Al Wasl manager Rui Vitoria acknowledged that fixture uncertainty might have impacted his team's disjointed performance. "We never know when we have these situations, if it is good or not so good," Vitoria remarked. "If we have some rhythm and a sequence of games, we don't know exactly what will happen in the next game. It was a long time without competition. But we prepared our model of the game; we tried to improve the faults that we need to improve, and we went for the match. We saw on the pitch that we could be much better than our opponent, but we gave them oxygen. We gave them the opportunity to believe they could get a better result. We never killed the game, and we opened the doors for the opponent to be more confident. We cannot see only the negative. We are scoring, playing attacking football, and creating opportunities. But as a coach, in my career, my team normally doesn’t receive so many goals, and we have to resolve that problem."
