Swedish police have taken one person into custody following a sword attack at a school in central Sweden that left several individuals injured. According to a statement issued by the Fagersta municipality on Friday, an assailant armed with a sword entered Brinellskolan and wounded multiple people before being detained by law enforcement.
Authorities confirmed they received an emergency call regarding ongoing deadly violence at the Fagersta school. Police spokesman Pelle Vamstad, speaking to the TT news agency, stated that officers arrived at the scene early Friday afternoon following the initial alarm. Investigators are currently gathering camera footage for the preliminary inquiry.
While the municipality did not immediately disclose the exact number of wounded victims, law enforcement officials secured the premises and neighboring schools were placed under lockdown. Reports from the Aftonbladet newspaper indicated that a suspect wielding a machete sustained a leg wound after being shot by police. Meanwhile, public broadcaster SVT reported a heavy emergency response, including numerous ambulances, police vehicles, and a helicopter stationed outside the facility in the city of approximately 12,000 residents.
Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer addressed the incident, noting that the government is monitoring developments closely and maintaining direct communication with police officials working intensively at the scene.
