XRG, the international energy investment arm of Adnoc, has finalized an agreement to acquire Shell's stake in a significant Australian natural gas project for $1.5 billion. This strategic move is part of XRG's broader effort to diversify its investment portfolio, particularly as geopolitical tensions, such as the Iran war, continue to disrupt global energy markets.

The Abu Dhabi-based entity, XRG, will purchase the stake in Australia's North West Shelf LNG project. This acquisition marks XRG's inaugural investment in the Australian LNG sector and is expected to enhance its access to customers across the Asia-Pacific region, according to a company statement released on Tuesday.

The transaction, which is contingent upon regulatory approvals and the fulfillment of standard closing conditions, will grant XRG access to one of the world's largest integrated LNG developments. This facility boasts a liquefaction capacity of 14.3 million tonnes per year and holds substantial remaining resources estimated at 4.4 trillion cubic feet equivalent.

XRG has been actively expanding its global investment portfolio with the stated intention of doubling its asset value over the next decade. Established in 2024 as an international lower-carbon energy and chemicals investment company with an enterprise value exceeding $80 billion, XRG has already secured stakes in multiple global gas projects. The recent acquisition of the North West Shelf stake further solidifies XRG's presence and influence in the Asia-Pacific market.

The North West Shelf project, which has been operational for over four decades, plays a crucial role in supplying Australia's domestic gas needs and supporting its energy exports. XRG highlighted the project's contribution to domestic energy security, job creation, international trade, and Australia's standing as a leading global energy exporter.

Mohamed Al Aryani, president of XRG International Gas, commented on the strategic importance of the investment. "This investment advances XRG’s strategy to build a leading international gas business serving growing demand across Asia-Pacific. The North West Shelf combines immediate production, strategic infrastructure, and future upstream development opportunities, making it a strong fit with our long-term ambitions," Al Aryani stated. He further added, "XRG understands the importance of balancing export success with local energy needs. We believe continued investment in the North West Shelf can help sustain domestic gas supply, support regional energy security, create jobs, and deliver lasting economic benefits for Australia."
