Democrat Roy Cooper has emerged victorious in North Carolina’s United States Senate race, representing a substantial gain for the Democratic party as they aim to regain control of the chamber. Cooper, a moderate who previously served two terms as governor, is the first Democrat to win one of the state's two US Senate seats since 2008. This victory marks a significant shift in a state that has narrowly supported Donald Trump in presidential elections since 2016. Cooper replaces outgoing Republican Senator Thom Tillis, who chose not to pursue a third term. Throughout the campaign, Cooper consistently held a lead over his Republican opponent, Michael Whatley, former chairman of the Republican National Committee, prompting Republicans to withdraw funding from Whatley's campaign. Cooper's win is particularly noteworthy given North Carolina's recent voting history.
