Ollie Watkins netted a brace, securing a crucial 2-0 victory for Al Hilal against Shabab Al Ahli in Riyadh on Tuesday, thereby reigniting the Saudi Pro League side's AFC Champions League Elite campaign. The win propelled Simone Inzaghi's squad to nine points after four matches, marking the halfway point of the western league phase. This performance served as a strong rebound following their previous week's defeat to Qatar's Al Shamal.

"It was a tough game; I thought they played very well," commented Watkins. "There are many strong teams in this competition, but I believe it was an important win, and it's satisfying to score a couple of goals."

Watkins opened the scoring in the sixth minute, capitalizing on a midfield ball-winning challenge by Kalidou Koulibaly that put Shabab Al Ahli under pressure. The former Chelsea defender advanced into the penalty area, laid off the ball to Watkins, who, after fending off Nemanja Maksimovic, slotted his shot into the bottom corner.

He extended his team's lead just after the interval, converting an expert finish from an incisive pass delivered by Yusuf Akcicek from the halfway line.

"We faced a strong opponent, a team that had won all three of their previous matches in the Asian tournament," stated Inzaghi. "However, our players performed exceptionally well and took control of the game. This victory is a positive step for us, especially heading into the upcoming break."

The victory brings Al Hilal level on points with Shabab Al Ahli, who had previously won their first three league phase matches.

"We played against a high-level opponent, and any mistake against them can lead to defeat, which is what happened," acknowledged Shabab Al Ahli coach Andre Jardine. "We could have achieved a better result and avoided defeat. Football relies on effectiveness in attack and defence, and Hilal excelled in both, making them the better side."

In other West Asia fixtures, Iranian side Esteghlal also reached nine points with a 1-0 win over Qatar's Al Shamal, thanks to a 91st-minute goal from Albania international Jasir Asani. "It was a hard game," said Asani, who scored for the third time in four matches in the competition. "From the first minute, we showed our quality, but the other team was very good. We missed many chances to open the game, but this is football."

The top eight teams from the 16-team league phase in both East and West Asia will advance to the next round. The quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final are scheduled to be played in a centralized format in Saudi Arabia during April and May. UAE champions Al Ain currently lead the West standings with a perfect 12 points from their four games.
