The Democratic Party has successfully regained control of the House of Representatives, marking a significant shift in the lower chamber of the United States Congress. The chamber was officially called in favor of the left-wing party on Tuesday night. Democrats achieved this victory by securing the necessary five seats to flip the chamber from Republican control. The Republican Party had held the majority in the House since the 2022 midterms, during the first term of President Joe Biden.

The current 119th Congress consists of 218 Republicans, 214 Democrats, one independent, and two vacancies. All 435 seats in the House were contested in this election, with terms lasting two years, in contrast to the six-year terms for the Senate.

With this win, the Democrats' party leader in the House, Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York, is expected to be chosen as the Speaker of the House, the chamber's highest-ranking officer. This position would place Jeffries third in the line of presidential succession. He would also make history as the first Black individual to hold this influential role. He is set to succeed the outgoing Republican Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana, who has served in the post since 2023.

The Democratic victory aligns with widespread projections, which anticipated their return to power in the House. These projections were largely attributed to voter backlash against the second administration of President Donald Trump, which experienced record-low approval ratings in the period leading up to the midterms. For the past two years, Trump’s Republican Party had maintained a political “trifecta” in Washington, D.C., holding control of the presidency and both chambers of Congress. The 120th Congress is scheduled to be sworn in on January 3, 2027.
