The global football community is united in grief following the death of CD Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel, who passed away on Tuesday after a severe on-field collision during a Spanish second division match. The 30-year-old striker was involved in an incident with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono, whose knee reportedly struck de Miguel in the chest. Despite receiving immediate medical attention on the pitch, de Miguel was transported to a hospital where he suffered a cardiac arrest in the ambulance.
Tenerife confirmed the tragic news on Tuesday morning, stating, “There are no words of comfort. There is absolutely nothing to mitigate this feeling full of sadness.” The club has declared six days of official mourning, suspending all club activities. Players, staff, and officials are expected to attend de Miguel’s funeral in his hometown of Navahermosa, Toledo. A tribute match will be held at Tenerife’s Heliodoro Stadium on Saturday at 6 pm local time.
In a mark of respect, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) postponed all domestic matches on Tuesday and extended the suspension until Friday, November 6. UEFA, European football’s governing body, announced that a minute’s silence would be observed at all Champions League matches this week. UEFA expressed their sorrow, stating, “We have searched for words and found only silence. In that silence, our hearts and thoughts are with his family, his teammates, everyone at CD Tenerife, and all those who mourn this tragic loss.”
Tributes poured in from across the football world, including from Barcelona and Aston Villa on Tuesday night, where victims of a recent train accident in Toledo were also remembered. The Champions League anthem was notably not played as a sign of respect. Barcelona forward Raphinha shared his condolences, saying, “Wherever [de Miguel] is, I hope he finds his way. I want to send his family strength… and today, not talk about football.” He added, “After I saw the news, I didn’t feel good. In the end, he was a fellow football player. This could have happened to any of us. It could have happened to me. It’s very difficult to go out and play a game in these circumstances. He was a player who was the same age as me. Maybe that’s why it affected me so much.”
A screen displayed a portrait of de Miguel before the match between Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich. Social media platforms were inundated with messages of sympathy from football clubs and fans worldwide. Prominent players such as Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, Ferran Torres, Pedri, and Paul Pogba also paid their respects.
Hundreds of fans gathered outside gate 9 of Estadio Heliodoro, the site of the collision during de Miguel’s final match, to lay flowers, light candles, and place photographs in his memory.
Andorra goalkeeper Owono released a statement expressing his devastation, stating that the incident would remain with him “for the rest of my life.” He emphasized, “I want everyone to know that I never intended to hurt anyone. It was a terrible accident, something I wish with all my heart I could take back. No words can express the pain, guilt and heartbreak I feel right now.”
Local police have initiated an investigation into the incident. Despite some calls for involuntary manslaughter charges, it is unlikely Owono will face criminal proceedings. Videos circulating online showed Tenerife fans chanting “assassin” at Owono as de Miguel was stretchered off. The incident drew parallels to a collision in the 1982 World Cup semifinal involving former French defender Patrick Battiston, who was knocked unconscious by West German goalkeeper Harald Schumacher. Battiston, who later recovered fully, commented, “It really shocked and moved me. Especially to see his teammates and opponents take their heads in their hands. What happened is terrible.”
