Vice President JD Vance has attributed his party's significant midterm election losses to the ongoing war in Iran, suggesting that the conflict may not have justified ceding control of the US Congress to the Democrats. In a detailed post on X, Vance stated, “The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night. If you’d like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Everyone knows why we lost. And any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there.”

Vance, who is considered a potential presidential candidate in 2028 and a successor to the Make America Great Again movement, has been actively involved in negotiations with Iran as both nations seek an end to the conflict. This war has negatively impacted their economies and driven up global fuel prices.

His remarks regarding Tehran have been notably more conciliatory than those of other administration officials. His post-election statement appears to be the most direct public disagreement he has had with the President on an issue that is likely to continue to challenge Republicans as the war progresses.

Citing a pollster he trusts, Vance revealed that ending the Iran war and altering the US relationship with Israel were identified as two of the top four reasons cited by Americans who had voted for Trump in 2024 but intended to vote for Democrats in the 2026 midterms. In contrast, following the electoral setback, Trump expressed no regrets about initiating the conflict, telling The Wall Street Journal, “I did the right thing. I would have done it again.”
