In a significant victory for the Democratic Party's progressive wing, Democratic candidate Randy Villegas has defeated Republican incumbent David Valadao in California’s 22nd congressional district. The race, held on November 3, 2026, was one of the most closely watched contests in the state.

Villegas, an educator and son of Mexican immigrants who grew up in the Central Valley, ran a campaign that garnered support from prominent figures like Senator Bernie Sanders. His platform focused on addressing the rising cost of living, opposing healthcare cuts, and condemning sweeping immigration raids. Addressing his supporters in Bakersfield, Villegas declared it a "historic victory for the Central Valley" and emphasized that the win was a collective effort: "And let me tell you, that victory is not because of me. It is because of us."

The outcome in this district reflects a broader national trend, with voters expressing anger over surging prices, partly attributed to the Trump administration's policies, including its decision to launch a war on Iran and overreach in areas like ICE raids. Polls had indicated a decline in the president's popularity, closely tied to public dissatisfaction with his handling of the economy and the cost of living.

Valadao, despite his image as a moderate with Central Valley ties, could not escape this trend. The election also saw a significant backlash among Latino voters against the administration's immigration policies. Following the Republican Party's gains with Latino voters in 2024, these inroads have diminished. Incensed by aggressive immigration enforcement and rising prices, Latino voters nationwide have shifted back towards the Democrats. A member of the United Farm Workers (UFW) labor union noted that some voters regretted supporting Trump, feeling he had not fulfilled his promises. ICE raids in the Central Valley sent shockwaves through immigrant and Latino communities, with arrests of farmworkers and family members contradicting the administration's claims of targeting criminals. Villegas strongly criticized these raids and Valadao's support for increasing the ICE budget.

Villegas's victory also demonstrates the competitiveness of progressive candidates. He overcame a challenge in the primary from California State Assembly member Jasmeet Bains, who represented the party's establishment wing and cautioned against Villegas's progressive stances in a traditionally conservative region. Villegas's populist message, emphasizing cost of living and healthcare access, resonated with voters who feel the economy favors the wealthy. His campaign received endorsements from Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and mobilized organized labor to get out the vote. Villegas proclaimed, "We beat the Democratic establishment. We beat the Republican establishment. We beat corporate PAC money. We beat AIPAC!"

Manpreet Kaur, the progressive vice mayor of Bakersfield and an early Villegas supporter, stated, "Randy’s race has shown us that the Central Valley cannot be counted out of following the really urgent change that we need in every corner of our country. And the Central Valley is included in that." Villegas's win positions him as a figure proving progressives can succeed in races outside traditional strongholds.
