United States First Lady Melania Trump has called on Russia and Ukraine to build upon a recent localized ceasefire and pursue a more "enduring" peace, during a White House meeting with officials from both nations. The event on Thursday marked what the White House described as potentially the first time in American history a First Lady has personally convened representatives of two warring countries at the White House for diplomatic discussions.

Attendees included Kirill Dmitriev, a special envoy of Russian President Vladimir Putin; Yana Lantratova, Russia’s human rights commissioner; David Arakhamia, leader of the Servant of the People party in Ukraine’s parliament; and Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s parliamentary human rights commissioner.

"Together, we can create something more enduring than a temporary ceasefire," Mrs. Trump stated, encouraging both sides to view the humanitarian truce in Oleshky as a "spark in a world of darkness." She detailed her role as an "exclusive intermediary," established through written agreements signed by both countries, and confirmed her involvement in all planning stages, including the review of de-mining plans and evacuation routes.

Ukrainian representatives presented the First Lady with the Order of Princess Olga, first class, an award previously bestowed upon her by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Mrs. Trump also presented the senior officials with letters she had penned to President Putin and President Zelenskyy.

The six-day truce in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, Kherson region, and its surrounding area, facilitated aid deliveries and the evacuation of approximately 800 individuals. An estimated 2,000 civilians remained in the city. This truce represented the longest multi-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, and was the first joint relief operation in four years and eight months.

The White House attributed the mediation of this truce to Melania Trump, although Pope Leo XIV also advocated for aid and evacuations. Divergent accounts exist regarding the primary broker of the truce.

The truce expired last Sunday without an extension, one day prior to a Russian bombing of an aid distribution point in Komyshuvakha, Zaporizhia region, which reportedly killed at least 40 people, according to Ukrainian President Zelenskyy. New US-brokered talks between Russia and Ukraine are anticipated in Abu Dhabi on November 10 and 11.
