A new report from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) highlights a critical failure: the world is not adapting quickly enough to the escalating human and economic impacts of the climate crisis. The UNEP report specifically calls out wealthy nations, which are largely responsible for historical carbon emissions, for not fulfilling their financial commitments to support developing countries. Despite pledges of billions of dollars made at various Conference of the Parties (COP) meetings to help these nations build resilience, only a small fraction of these funds has actually been disbursed. This shortfall has significant consequences for vulnerable populations and ecosystems.
The discussion features insights from several experts: Sandrine Dixson-Decleve, Honorary President of the Club of Rome; Avantika Goswami, Climate Change and Green Economy Programme Manager at the Centre for Science and Environment; and Danny Sriskandarajah, Chief Executive of the New Economics Foundation. They explore the ramifications of this unmet financial responsibility.
