US President Donald Trump indicated that a resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict may be on the horizon, following a meeting at the White House with Kirill Dmitriev, the special envoy of Russian President Vladimir Putin. "I think we’re going to be very close to settling Russia-Ukraine," Trump informed reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday, though he refrained from divulging specifics of his discussion with Dmitriev. "There’s going to be an agreement. It’s going to be a big agreement, and it’s going to involve more than Ukraine," Trump stated, suggesting that the scope of the potential deal could encompass "all of Europe".

Trump has repeatedly expressed optimism about an imminent agreement to conclude Europe’s most significant conflict since World War II. Recent weeks have seen an uptick in negotiations. Trump confirmed he did not meet with the Ukrainian delegation on Thursday.

The meeting between the US President and Dmitriev occurred subsequent to a diplomatic event hosted by First Lady Melania Trump. This event convened Russian and Ukrainian representatives to acknowledge and build upon the localized six-day truce she helped to broker in Oleshky, a city in southern Ukraine, during October. The US President was not in attendance at this event.

The temporary ceasefire, which lasted from October 27 to November 1, facilitated the evacuation of nearly 800 civilians from Oleshky, a Russian-occupied city in Ukraine’s Kherson region. It also enabled the delivery of essential food and medical supplies. Senior officials from both nations were present on Thursday, including Dmitriev; Yana Lantratova, Russia’s human rights commissioner; David Arakhamia, the leader of the Servant of the People party in Ukraine’s parliament; and Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s parliamentary human rights commissioner.

Melania Trump also addressed the gathering, which the White House characterized as a historic moment, noting it was "the first time in American history that a First Lady has personally brought representatives of two nations at war to the White House for diplomacy". "Together, we can create something more enduring than a temporary ceasefire," she remarked, encouraging both parties to view the humanitarian truce in Oleshky "as a spark in a world of darkness". The First Lady presented envelopes to the representatives of Putin and Zelenskyy, requesting they deliver her personal letters to each leader. Dmitriev gifted her a painting created by an 11-year-old girl, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sent her the Order of Princess Olga, a Ukrainian award recognizing her contributions to the ceasefire.
