The United States Department of Justice announced a massive $400m settlement with the popular short-video app TikTok to resolve allegations that the platform breached children's online privacy regulations.

According to a statement released on Friday, the DOJ reached the agreement with TikTok, ByteDance, and associated entities following concerns regarding compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. This legislation mandates that services directed at children must secure parental consent prior to gathering personal details from users under the age of 13.

The DOJ originally initiated legal action against TikTok and ByteDance in 2024. Officials stated that TikTok knowingly allowed underage users to establish standard accounts, enabling them to produce and distribute short-form videos and messages with adults and other users on the main TikTok platform without obtaining the necessary parental permission.

Under the terms of the agreement, TikTok is required to pay the DOJ $300m immediately, with an additional $100m to be paid once a court vacates a prior settlement established with TikTok’s predecessor, Musical.ly.

“This settlement is a major victory for American children and parents,” remarked Associate Attorney General Stanley E Woodward Jr in an official news release, emphasizing the Department's commitment to holding companies accountable for safeguarding minors online.

Previously in January, ByteDance agreed to establish a majority US-owned joint venture aimed at protecting domestic data and averting a potential US ban affecting the app's more than 200 million American users.

The DOJ noted that TikTok has implemented major modifications and enhanced protective measures for children's privacy since the lawsuit was filed. Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate of the Justice Department’s Civil Division stated that the resolution highlights significant progress and successfully concludes the matter.

Al Jazeera has reached out to TikTok to request comment on the settlement.
