The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has pledged to honor Cristiano Ronaldo following his international retirement, as manager Jorge Jesus unveiled his first squad since the captain's departure. The announcement came amidst intense questioning regarding the rift that preceded Ronaldo's exit.
The 41-year-old forward announced his retirement on social media on Thursday, concluding a Portugal career marked by 234 appearances and 146 goals. FPF president Pedro Proenca vowed to celebrate Ronaldo's significant contributions, though it remains uncertain if the player will agree to a farewell match. "No tribute will ever be enough to thank him for everything he has done for Portuguese football, for Portugal," Proenca stated before the squad announcement on Friday. "We will do everything we can to honour the legacy he leaves us. Everything he has done deserves to be honoured and celebrated."
Jesus selected seven new players, including five from the under-21 team, for upcoming Nations League matches against Wales and Denmark. However, Ronaldo's absence from the squad dominated the press conference. The forward had previously left Portugal's camp without permission in late September, prior to a Nations League fixture against Denmark, and did not return, citing broken promises from Jesus as the reason.
Jesus appeared visibly irritated when journalists pressed him about the dispute, repeatedly emphasizing his desire to focus on his squad selections. "All my decisions were made with the team in mind. As a manager, I have always defended what was best for the team. I am at peace with my decision," Jesus remarked, asserting there were no hard feelings.
He added that Ronaldo had remained in his plans until the announcement on Thursday. "I found out when we all did," Jesus said. "Until then, I knew nothing about it. He was playing, he was scoring goals; he was one of the players on my squad list." Jesus confirmed he had not contacted Ronaldo since the retirement announcement. Proenca, meanwhile, expressed that he, Jesus, and the entire federation respected Ronaldo's decision, commending his leadership and impact on successive generations of Portuguese players. "The best way to honour and celebrate him is to honour his boundless ambition. To always play to win. To never be afraid of being the best in the world," Proenca concluded. "Thank you for everything, captain. This is and always will be your home."
