Authorities in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh have initiated a thorough investigation after a six-year-old child collapsed and reportedly died following a physical altercation with a teacher inside a school classroom. Security camera footage from the school in Visakhapatnam captured the tragic event, which quickly circulated across local media outlets on Thursday, sparking widespread nationwide debate regarding corporal punishment.
The verified video footage depicts a female teacher grasping the child by his garments before striking him in the face, immediately after which the young boy collapses. Nara Lokesh, the IT and Education Minister of Andhra Pradesh, addressed the incident on Facebook on Thursday, stating that legal action is being pursued against both the individuals at fault and the school management.
Police have launched an active inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of the student, identified by local media as Pranay Tej. Expressing deep sorrow on X on Friday, Nara Lokesh emphasized that violence has no place in educational institutions under the guise of discipline and confirmed that strict measures have been ordered against those responsible.
Grieving relatives gathered at the hospital upon receiving the news, demanding severe consequences for the parties involved, as reported by NDTV India. The father of Pranay Tej shared that his son had appeared in good health when leaving for classes in the morning, noting the boy's eagerness to attend school.
Police Inspector Pudi Vara Prasad informed the Press Trust of India that a formal case has been registered under Section 194 of the BNSS following a written complaint from the boy's father. Prasad confirmed that the body was returned to the parents following completion of inquest and post-mortem protocols, with the exact cause of death pending the receipt of all relevant medical and forensic reports.
Despite being officially prohibited, a 2018 study conducted by the Indian NGO Agrasar revealed that approximately 80 percent of low-income students in India encounter corporal punishment from educators. Addressing the governmental response, Palla Srinivasa Rao, the Andhra Pradesh state president of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), stated that officials have reacted appropriately, noting that an investigative committee has been established to guide subsequent actions.
