A former world No. 1, Jon Rahm, is making his debut at the Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship and has taken the lead after three rounds at Yas Links, with a score of 18-under par. Despite the absence of 11 top players, including three from the world's top 20, the leaderboard remains competitive. Rory McIlroy, a previous contender who has yet to win the title in 14 attempts, is two shots behind Rahm. Adam Scott is a further stroke back, with the combined major title wins of Rahm, McIlroy, and Scott totaling nine. Also in contention, within one stroke of the leader, are Tyrrell Hatton, the 2021 champion, and Francesco Laporta.

Rahm expressed his desire to win on his first appearance, stating, "It would be amazing [to lift the trophy on his first appearance at Yas]. It's been a good year so far, but to win again on the DP World Tour would be special. To add to the Rolex Series tally and make it six would be fantastic, as well. There's still a lot of golf to play and a lot of things to get done."

McIlroy followed his second-round 63 with a 67, five-under-par. The two-shot deficit he faces is precisely the number of strokes he incurred in the first round due to a rules infraction identified via video review. Although McIlroy has moved past the incident, he recognizes the need for a low score in the final round to secure his first Abu Dhabi title. "I thought today could have been something similar [to his second-round 63] as well," McIlroy commented. "There hasn't been much wind. The course is in perfect condition. The pin positions were a little tougher today. I guess they felt like they were trying to protect the course a little bit and protect from some of the really low scores. But there's low ones out there and I'm going to have to go out and shoot a low one, something in the mid to low 60s to get it done tomorrow. That will be the goal."
