Heavy rainfall has caused widespread flooding across the Gaza Strip, severely damaging the makeshift shelters and tents of tens of thousands of displaced Palestinians, according to authorities. Al Jazeera’s Ibrahim al-Khalili reported from Gaza City that the temporary tents, which many Palestinians are forced to inhabit, offer insufficient protection against harsh weather conditions. "The latest storm exposed just how fragile the protection is. In just a few hours, heavy rains and strong winds tore through shelters families had spent days trying to reinforce," al-Khalili stated. He observed soaked mattresses, pillows, and clothing, noting that approximately 400,000 displaced Palestinians are currently in locations highly vulnerable to further flooding. The Government Media Office reported that since late Friday, heavy rain and strong winds have flooded 70,000 tents and caused dozens of walls to collapse. This flooding exacerbates the existing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, compounded by Israel's ongoing severe restrictions on aid supplies to the territory. Ashraf Abu Amra, reporting from Deir el-Balah in central Gaza for Al Jazeera, mentioned that displaced families whose shelters were flooded had not received food aid since early Saturday. UNICEF special representative in Palestine, Jonathan Veitch, described the living conditions as "terrible" for the majority of the population and appealed for increased funding to provide essential aid. The Gaza Civil Defence reported receiving at least 1,500 emergency calls, with over 2,000 buildings at risk of collapse and a need for at least 300,000 tents to adequately house those affected. The storm's damage is estimated by Gaza’s Government Media Office at $3 million, though relief organizations have long struggled to deliver necessary support. Israel’s war, which commenced on October 7, 2023, has devastated Gaza's infrastructure, and continued restrictions on aid, shelter materials, and reconstruction supplies have hindered relief efforts. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of over 74,640 Palestinians since October 7, 2023, following a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel. Since a ceasefire took effect in October 2025, Israel has reportedly killed at least 1,610 Palestinians.
