Swedish authorities have officially identified the victim of Friday's devastating sword attack at a Fagersta high school as a 17-year-old girl, sparking national mourning among classmates and political leaders alike. Police confirmed the tragic news on Saturday, stating that the young victim's family has been properly notified, though further details were withheld. According to the local newspaper Fagersta-Posten, the girl's parents confirmed her passing.

The principal of the Brinell School informed local media that the 18-year-old suspect is a student at the institution. The perpetrator entered the school building on Friday afternoon—merely days after students returned from summer break—and was promptly apprehended at the scene. The violent rampage also left two boys, aged 12 and 17, seriously wounded, with one needing emergency surgery. A third victim sustained minor injuries and has already been discharged to recover at home.

By Saturday morning, the area surrounding the Brinell School had evolved into a poignant makeshift memorial filled with candles, flowers, and grieving visitors. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and opposition leader Magdalena Andersson personally traveled to Fagersta to honor the victims, prompting political parties nationwide to suspend their campaigns ahead of the upcoming September election.

An anonymous police source revealed to the Reuters news agency that investigators are actively exploring whether the suspect held connections to online forums glorifying school violence. Authorities are scrutinizing a specific TikTok account that was deleted shortly after the incident. The profile had published a photo of a sword just 20 minutes prior to the attack and previously shared content alluding to historical school attacks in Sweden as well as Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik. Investigators are probing these digital networks to determine if external influences incited the suspect.

Prosecutors have ordered the suspect to remain in custody on preliminary charges of murder and multiple counts of attempted murder. Meanwhile, police have conducted approximately 80 interviews, with intentions to question nearly all 450 students and staff members of the school. This tragedy compounds a distressing trend of violence in Sweden, following last year's devastating school shooting in Orebro that claimed 10 lives and the 2015 racially motivated sword attack in Trollhattan that killed three people.
