Vessels near the Strait of Hormuz, as observed from Musandam, Oman, on August 17, remain at the center of growing tensions following a new warning from Tehran. According to state-affiliated Press TV, Mohsen Rezaei, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, has threatened to halt all oil flow and traffic through the critical waterway if neighboring countries participate in an expected US economic crackdown.

The Strait of Hormuz serves as the primary route for shipping crude from oil-rich nations like Saudi Arabia and Kuwait to global markets. This narrow passage has been a major flashpoint since Tehran effectively closed it following airstrikes by the US and Israel on February 28, with Iran controlling the northern side of the channel.

Data from the US Energy Information Administration highlights the strait as a critical oil chokepoint, through which approximately 20 million barrels of oil—accounting for roughly one-fifth of daily global production—historically flowed. In addition to crude oil, the channel carries about one-fifth of the world's liquefied natural gas trade, primarily originating from Qatar. To mitigate these disruptions, certain producers such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have successfully established alternative routes for their exports.
