North Korea has strongly denounced major military drills planned by the United States and South Korea for next week, labeling the exercises as a direct provocation that escalates regional tensions.

According to Pyongyang’s Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), a spokesperson for North Korea’s Foreign Ministry stated on Friday that military cooperation between the US, Japan, and South Korea is evolving into a nuclear alliance. The spokesperson warned that North Korea intends to meet these escalating threats with a proportional increase in its deterrent capabilities.

The upcoming exercises, officially named "Ulchi Freedom Shield," are scheduled to run from August 17 to August 27. Designed to adapt to North Korea’s modern military capabilities, these drills will feature specialized training to counter drones, GPS disruption, and cyberattacks.

The North Korean Foreign Ministry statement criticized the scope of the upcoming maneuvers, noting that the US has indicated these exercises will differ significantly from those held over the past five years by focusing on modern warfare tactics.

Amid these developments, international observers note that North Korea previously deployed an estimated 12,000 to 15,000 soldiers to support Russia in its war against Ukraine, with reports suggesting preparations for an additional deployment of 10,000 troops. Colonel Ryan Donald, spokesperson for the US and South Korean Combined Forces Command, remarked that these overseas deployments have provided valuable battlefield experience that is now being factored into allied training.

Furthermore, North Korea accused the US of lowering the threshold for nuclear weapons deployment and driving the global security landscape toward conflict. This rhetoric coincided with recent missile activity, including a ballistic missile launch toward the sea off the Korean Peninsula’s east coast.

The Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises will mobilize 18,000 South Korean soldiers alongside members of the 28,500-strong US military contingent stationed in South Korea.
