Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Asim Munir, traveled to Tehran for high-level talks with senior Iranian officials, in a renewed effort by Islamabad to mediate an end to the ongoing conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran.

This marks Munir’s third trip to Iran this year, following earlier visits in April and May. The diplomatic push comes as the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has stalled, with its initial 60-day window lapsing in mid-August without an extension.

During his stay, Munir is expected to meet with newly appointed Iranian military leadership, including Major-General Ahmad Vahidi, Major-General Ali Abdollahi, and Mohsen Rezaei. Discussions will likely address regional stability, the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz, and potential threats involving Houthi activities in Yemen following a strike that resulted in casualties among Pakistani sailors.

The visit coincides with heightened economic pressure, as Washington prepares to roll out additional sanctions against Tehran. While analysts remain divided on whether Islamabad's mediation efforts can yield a breakthrough—with figures like Andreas Krieg pointing to Qatar as the primary political mediator—supporters argue that Pakistan provides a vital military-to-military channel and an essential off-ramp for both Washington and Tehran.
