With diplomacy stalled over ending the war on Iran, Washington is seeking to ratchet up pressure on Tehran with unprecedented economic measures. Following United States President Donald Trump’s threats to punish any country doing business with Tehran, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced a new series of economic measures designed to collapse the Iranian government, urging nations worldwide to join the effort. In response, Tehran has threatened to retaliate against any country that joins the US in imposing economic sanctions.

The Trump administration has been waging an economic pressure campaign against Iran under the banner of “Operation Economic Fury” since the launch of the war in February. This includes a naval blockade on Iranian ports to prevent oil exports and targeted actions against companies, brokers, and tankers accused of helping Iran sell its oil abroad. Trump recently announced on Truth Social what he termed the “most crushing economic operation” against Iran, threatening sanctions against any country that conducts business with the Iranian government.

Bessent further elaborated on CNBC that the US will apply the toughest sanctions in history alongside the ongoing naval blockade to force a regime collapse. He warned the international community that trading with Iran would result in severe economic penalties from the US Treasury and government.

Iran has strongly condemned the impending US sanctions. Esmaeil Baghaei, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, stated on X that the announcement represents an aggressive assertion of extraterritorial sovereignty that erodes the UN-based inter-state system. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed the measures as bound to fail, while Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, warned that any nation participating in economic restrictions against Iran would be regarded as an enemy facing seismic retaliation.

Regional dynamics remain tense as countries navigate the fallout. China has pushed back against Washington's threats, advocating for diplomatic and political solutions, while Gulf nations find themselves caught in the middle of the conflict. Analysts remain skeptical about whether major trading partners like China and Russia can be entirely insulated from or forced to comply with unilateral US measures.
