Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has successfully regained his parliamentary seat after defeating his main challenger, Count Binface, in a by-election he triggered by resigning his post last month. Farage secured 22,239 votes in the Clacton by-election, outperforming serial joke candidate Count Binface—who wears a rubbish can on his head and identifies as an intergalactic space warrior—with his opponent finishing at 9,455 votes.

Major political parties in the United Kingdom boycotted the election, resulting in a unique face-off for Farage, who aimed to strengthen his political standing following financial impropriety allegations. While Farage skipped the official vote count early Friday and canceled a planned victory speech, the BBC reported that he had previously claimed a convincing and overwhelming win as the ballots were counted.

Reflecting on the contest, Farage stated that he initiated the by-election so that the voters of Clacton could judge him directly rather than the mainstream media in Britain. Meanwhile, Count Binface achieved his best-ever electoral result with 9,455 votes across his six election runs since 2019, highlighting his unconventional campaign promises that included capping croissant prices.

Voter turnout for Thursday’s election reached 44 percent, dipping from the 59 percent recorded during the 2024 general election, which remains typical for a by-election. Farage and Count Binface led an extensive field of independent contenders, joke candidates, and fringe political party representatives.

As a prominent right-wing populist and leading Brexit campaigner, Farage is viewed by many as a potential candidate for prime minister, with a platform centered on curbing migration. He originally triggered the by-election by stepping down from parliament in July amid an investigation regarding an unreported 5 million pound ($6.75m) gift from an overseas crypto billionaire, though Farage has maintained that he has done nothing wrong and broken no laws.
