US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent outlined a sweeping new economic pressure campaign against Iran during a press conference at the Treasury Department on August 24, vowing to target Tehran’s financial interests globally. Speaking on Monday, Bessent stated that the US intends to target all sources of Iranian revenue, including oil, with the ultimate goal of cutting off Tehran from international trade and business partnerships.

“Around the globe, our objective is to sever every economic lifeline that sustains this tyrannical regime until Tehran stands alone,” Bessent declared, while issuing a stark warning to all entities facilitating trade or purchasing oil from Iran. He emphasized that countries must choose between the US and Iran, noting that secondary penalties will apply to any trade partners of Tehran. Bessent warned that “no one is above the reach of US sanctions,” adding that any entities facilitating transactions that convert Iranian oil into funds will face direct targeting.

Formally dubbed “Operation Economic Outcast” and characterized by Bessent as an “economic D-day,” the initiative draws a parallel to the historic Allied landings against Nazi Germany in World War II. This aggressive economic strategy arrives nearly six months into an ongoing conflict that began when the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran without direct provocation. While these military actions resulted in the deaths of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and several other top officials, they have not succeeded in dislodging the ruling system in Tehran.

In retaliation, Tehran launched missile and drone strikes across the region and effectively shut down and seized control of the Strait of Hormuz, causing global energy prices for oil and gas to surge. With previous diplomatic efforts and military engagements failing to resolve the crisis, Monday's sanctions represent the latest push by Washington to force major concessions from Iran, including the abandonment of its nuclear programme and an end to attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Bessent revealed that US President Donald Trump has actively contacted world leaders with direct requests to sever ties with the Iranian regime, cautioning that nations supporting the United States will benefit from partnership while those backing Iran will face international isolation. US officials confirmed that the newly implemented sanctions will specifically target five critical sectors of Iran's economy: digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping.
