Bitcoin has surpassed the $80,000 threshold for the first time since mid-May, fueled by renewed optimism across the cryptocurrency market. Data from CoinMarketCap showed that the world's leading cryptocurrency climbed approximately 4 per cent to hit $80,246 on Tuesday morning. Although Bitcoin experienced a strong rally throughout the previous week, its price remains significantly lower than the peak of roughly $126,000 reached in October.
The digital asset received a major catalyst when the US Treasury announced on Wednesday plans to double the scale of its long-dated securities repurchases to at least $4 billion per round over the upcoming quarter, with potential for further increases in Washington's Treasury buybacks.
Naeem Aslam, chief investment officer at Zaye Capital Markets, noted that improving liquidity expectations and a reduced regulatory risk premium are driving the latest upward trend. He explained that the US Treasury's initiative to increase purchases of longer-dated securities helped lower yields and boost risk appetite, while President Donald Trump's renewed push for transparent digital-asset legislation has heightened expectations for increased institutional participation.
During a recent White House gathering with crypto industry executives, President Trump urged the US Congress to enact a fair version of the Clarity Act. Ryan Lee, chief analyst at Bitget Research, stated that regulatory clarity is emerging as a primary market catalyst for 2026, and this initiative by President Trump and crypto leaders will undoubtedly elevate market sentiment with effects extending past immediate price movements.
According to Mr Lee, the US administration's focus on establishing a clear policy framework for digital assets will provide a template for other emerging markets seeking to regulate the expanding crypto sector. Markets will adopt a wait-and-watch approach in the upcoming weeks to determine whether this political momentum converts into legislative action.
Mr Aslam cautioned that while regulatory advancement, institutional custody growth, and favorable liquidity conditions support a continued upward trajectory—especially if US Treasury yields stay contained—stronger US economic growth could drive real yields back up and diminish the liquidity backing the current rally. Any ambiguity or political stalemate, he added, will maintain heightened market volatility.
