A devastating helium cylinder explosion inside a gift shop at Arabella Plaza Mall in New Cairo on Thursday evening resulted in three deaths and left 17 people injured.

According to Egypt's Health Ministry, the blast sparked a fire on the ground floor of the establishment. Civil defence teams successfully extinguished the blaze, while the Interior Ministry reported that the facades of several neighboring shops sustained damage from what it described as a limited fire.

Health Ministry spokesman Hossam Abdel Ghaffar stated that eight ambulances responded to the scene. Eleven of the injured victims were admitted to New Cairo Specialised Hospital, while six additional individuals were transported to nearby medical facilities for emergency treatment and evaluations. The ministry confirmed it is actively monitoring their recovery.

Initial reports surrounding the incident were conflicting, with some early accounts suggesting a lift had collapsed inside the mall, though the Interior Ministry subsequently refuted these claims. Egyptian prosecutors have launched an official investigation to determine the exact cause and circumstances of the explosion.

Although helium—frequently utilized by party and gift shops for balloon inflation—is non-flammable unlike propane or butane, it is stored under high pressure. This high-pressure containment means cylinders can pose severe hazards if they suffer damage, face excessive heat, or are improperly handled and stored. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether any of these specific factors contributed to Thursday's incident.
