A tarp remains in place on the facade of the John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Tuesday, August 25 in Washington, DC, the United States. United States President Donald Trump’s administration has issued a warning that Washington, DC’s Kennedy Center could face demolition if renovations are not permitted to reach completion.

In a Monday court filing, US Department of Justice (DOJ) lawyers informed a federal judge that the performing arts venue is in severe trouble, stating it cannot survive structurally or financially without intervention from the president or his administration. The filing warned that without these efforts, the center would deteriorate into an unsafe and decrepit structure requiring removal.

According to the DOJ filing, an outdoor amphitheatre overlooking the adjacent Potomac River could be constructed on the site if the venue is torn down. Lawyers noted that this replacement would fail to adequately honor the venue’s namesake, former US President John F Kennedy, but would be simpler and more economical.

This revelation emerged within the administration’s response to a legal effort attempting to block President Donald J. Trump's name from being inscribed on the building. US Representative Joyce Beatty, a Democratic congressional leader and Kennedy Center board member, filed a lawsuit after Trump-appointed board members voted to add an inscription crediting the president for restorations.

Any potential demolition of the historic Kennedy Center, which opened in 1971, is expected to encounter strong opposition from preservation groups and critics of the administration's planned changes. Norm Eisen, an attorney representing US Representative Joyce Beatty, strongly criticized the administration's stance on social media, promising a robust legal challenge.

DOJ lawyers maintained that the venue is structurally unsound and unsafe, while executive director Matt Floca previously noted that necessary renovations include replacing stage lifts, rigging systems, electrical work, and waterproofing. Although President Donald J. Trump previously announced plans to close the building for two years, the board recently voted to move forward with the closure following earlier legal roadblocks. The White House did not immediately reply to requests for comment.
