Tom Barrack, the US special envoy to Syria and ambassador to Turkey, has drawn fresh criticism following controversial remarks regarding Israel and the Golan Heights. During an appearance on a podcast hosted by Mario Nawfal, Mr Barrack stated that Israel "still" occupies the Golan Heights, a remark that directly challenges United Nations resolutions and contradicts the official Washington stance established during President Donald Trump's first term when US sovereignty recognition was granted to the strategic area.

The comments immediately sparked backlash from Republican Senator Rick Scott, who criticized the ambassador on X for failing to research the official US position properly. In response, Mr Barrack issued a clarification to AP on Monday, insisting that US policy on the Golan set by President Trump in 2019 remains unchanged, explaining that his comments aimed to illustrate why Israel would avoid annexation in Lebanon's south and to advocate for negotiated settlements over territorial conquest.

Amid reports from conservative activist Laura Loomer that Mr Barrack was summoned back to Washington for consultations—though the State Department declined to comment—additional scrutiny arose from the same podcast. Mr Barrack suggested that Israel might have provoked a confrontation with Turkey through a military airfield strike in eastern Idlib despite ongoing backchannel diplomatic talks. While Richard Grenell defended the ambassador by stating he is executing his duties as requested, Mr Barrack's tenure has been marked by previous controversies, including past remarks on Middle Eastern governance, warnings to journalists, and comments regarding Lebanon's regional stability.
