Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has worked to calm anxieties surrounding ongoing talks between his country and Israel, following a challenging seventh round of negotiations in Rome.
In a public statement on X, President Joseph Aoun emphasized that neither he nor the country's negotiators will permit Israel to retain control over any portion of Lebanese territory, declaring that no foreign soldier will remain on Lebanese soil. This reiterates Beirut’s primary demand at the negotiating table.
The seventh round of discussions concluded last week in Rome without visible advancement regarding the expansion of designated "pilot zones" in Lebanon. These areas represent small sectors where Israeli troops would withdraw and transfer authority to the Lebanese armed forces, provided the zones remain clear of Hezbollah militants.
While an Israeli source informed CNN that scheduling for the upcoming round of talks remains undecided, President Joseph Aoun reaffirmed his dedication to achieving a resolution through diplomacy.
"We always hear slogans saying that what is taken by force will only be recovered by force, but the facts on the ground have proven the falsehood of this saying," President Joseph Aoun noted.
