SpongeBob SquarePants has unexpectedly found himself at the center of a political storm in Egypt, as viral Facebook groups using AI to recreate Bikini Bottom for political satire attract millions of members. The controversial pages allowed users to generate virtual worlds resembling The Sims to mock economic pressures, high rents, inflation, traffic, and the harassment of women. Within days, the main group, titled 'Complaints of the People of Al Hamour Bottom', amassed close to two million members.
A teenage girl claiming to be the administrator posted a video urging critics to allow people to have fun and denying responsibility for spin-off groups. However, the content quickly dominated national discourse, sparking debates on television talk shows and social media. Pro-government figures, including talk show host Tamer Abdel Monaim, accused the Muslim Brotherhood of orchestrating the trend to sow confusion and threaten national security.
The original Facebook group was suspended for two months, though it remains unclear whether Meta or local authorities enforced the shutdown. Despite the suspension, numerous spin-off groups continue to proliferate as citizens use the underwater characters to voice grievances. While some view the trend as a national security threat, others see it as a vital outlet for expression, emerging at a time when President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has called for media reforms and freedom of expression.
