Kuwait and Pakistan on Thursday sealed a comprehensive defence and military co-operation agreement, marking a pivotal development in regional alliances influenced by the ongoing Iran war. The pact was formally unveiled during an official visit by Kuwaiti Defence Minister Sheikh Abdullah Al Sabah to Islamabad, where he held high-level discussions with Pakistan's Defence Minister Muhammad Asif.
According to an official statement from the Kuwaiti army, the talks focused on broadening military co-operation and addressing critical regional security and stability challenges. The agreement represents a major milestone in bilateral ties, facilitating enhanced co-ordination, the mutual exchange of expertise, and deeper integration between the armed forces of both nations.
The landmark deal comes as both Kuwait and Pakistan navigate significant security pressures tied to the Iran war. Pakistan has played a key mediating role between the US and Iran, utilizing its military leadership to guide negotiations. Meanwhile, Kuwait and other Gulf nations have confronted severe security concerns, including attacks by Iran and internal threats associated with the Iranian regime.
Regional security dynamics have also prompted broader coalitions, such as the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement announced in early August by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, which establishes a mutual defense commitment. Over the past six months, Kuwait has grappled with intermittent attacks from Iran and allied Iraqi factions, alongside neutralized terrorist plots linked to Hezbollah and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Domestic security remains a pressing issue for Kuwait. Earlier this month, the Kuwaiti Interior Ministry reported the disruption of a terrorist plot targeting a critical national facility and the subsequent arrest of a local national linked to ISIS. Additionally, authorities announced the largest drug bust in the nation's history, intercepting nearly $500 million worth of illicit substances. Kuwait continues to combat the regional trafficking of Captagon, highlighted by a joint operation with neighbouring Iraq in February that successfully seized over 300,000 Captagon pills.
