Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the chief minister of Pakistan's Punjab province, has received recognition from the Nobel Sustainability Trust for her administration's innovative use of technology to combat climate change, lower air pollution, revive forests, and protect wildlife.

According to an announcement this week from the provincial government's media office, the independent foundation—founded in Switzerland in 2007 by members of the Nobel family—has also extended an invitation to Ms Sharif to speak at its upcoming 2026 award gala and summit located in Hong Kong.

The official statement noted that this honor draws attention to Punjab's implementation of digital platforms, real-time monitoring, and data-driven systems designed to tackle air pollution and smog, alongside the oversight of local forests and wildlife. The province has worked to broaden technology-based air quality monitoring, pinpoint major emission sources, and enhance both enforcement and inter-agency coordination.

Additionally, the administration has rolled out digital monitoring and remote surveillance networks dedicated to forest and wildlife management. In official correspondence addressed to Ms Sharif, Nobel Sustainability Trust chairman Peter Nobel commended Punjab's transition toward technology-enabled governance.

This acknowledgment arrives while Pakistan's most populous province continues to battle intense air pollution and persistent winter smog, especially affecting Lahore and its surrounding regions. Environmental authorities are increasingly relying on advanced monitoring tools and stringent enforcement to mitigate pollution originating from transportation, industry, agriculture, and other contributors. Ms Sharif assumed office as the chief minister of Punjab in 2024.
