Investigators are currently working at the scene of a car explosion in Saint Petersburg that occurred on August 27, 2026. Authorities reported that a Russian military serviceman was killed in the incident. The blast took place in the Pushkinsky suburb on the outskirts of St Petersburg on Thursday, resulting in the death of the serviceman and injuries to his wife, according to the city’s branch of the Investigative Committee.

While the committee did not officially identify the man or his rank, the online Fontanka newspaper in Russia’s second-largest city identified him as a 53-year-old lieutenant colonel and high-ranking military officer, reporting that he died instantly or shortly after the vehicle’s engine was started. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian news website Ukrainska Pravda claimed that the lieutenant served within Russia’s Air Force and Air and Missile Defence units under the Aerospace Forces.

Witnesses stated that the explosion happened at approximately 10am local time (07:00 GMT) and completely destroyed the vehicle. The Russian Investigative Committee announced on Telegram that investigators and forensic experts, alongside operational services, are thoroughly examining the scene. Although a criminal probe was formally opened, authorities initially categorized the incident as a vehicle fire rather than immediately confirming an explosive device.

Amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Moscow has frequently accused Kyiv of orchestrating assassination attempts against top Russian military officials. While Kyiv has taken responsibility for certain incidents, it has denied involvement in others. Al Jazeera correspondent Yulia Shapovalova, reporting from Moscow, described this latest fatality as part of an ongoing series of targeted assassinations involving high-ranking Russian military figures.

Since the launch of Moscow’s military operation in Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has experienced multiple high-profile vehicle explosions and targeted attacks directed at military commanders and prominent pro-war figures across locations such as St Petersburg and Moscow. In a previous incident on August 5, the director of a drone-supplying factory for the Russian military was severely wounded and his driver killed when their car exploded 1,400 kilometres (870 miles) east of Moscow. At present, no group has claimed responsibility for the St Petersburg blast, and Ukraine has not issued any comments.
