Amid an escalating trade conflict with Canada, United States President Donald Trump announced the renaming of a major body of water shared by the two nations. During a Tuesday news conference held in the Oval Office, President Trump signed an executive order officially changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America, stating that the decision is effective immediately.

When questioned about the message behind the renaming, President Trump sharply criticized Canada's trade policies with the United States, alleging that the country has taken unfair advantage for years. Calling Canadian officials difficult, the president remarked that the creation of Lake America is an idea he has contemplated for an extended period.

This move mirrors a similar action taken when President Trump returned to the White House in January 2025, during which he signed an executive order rebranding the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. Although cartographers and international governments have utilized the name Gulf of Mexico for nearly five centuries, and Lake Ontario derives its designation from the Huron Indigenous term meaning \u201clake of shining waters\u201d, the administration has moved forward with these nationalistic rebranding efforts.

Concluding the Oval Office signing, President Trump hinted at potential future America-themed name changes for other major bodies of water bordering the United States, suggesting that the Atlantic Ocean or the Pacific Ocean might be next.
