More than 500 people have been confirmed dead following catastrophic flash floods and mudslides along the border between Nepal and the Chinese region of Tibet. According to an update released by Nepal Police on Friday afternoon, the death toll has reached 547, with an additional 1,473 people injured.

Over 4,000 police personnel have been deployed to respond to the disaster, while more than 1,000 people remain missing across the Himalayan country and neighbouring China. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies estimates that over 90,000 people have been directly affected by the disaster and are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

'It took everyone,' survivors and relatives shared as rescue teams continued their desperate search for survivors after a wall of ice, mud, and rock collapsed into a mountain river. David Fisher, head of delegation for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Nepal, noted that at least 93,000 people are believed to be impacted and in great need of support.

Authorities in Nepal are actively monitoring two lakes upstream of the flood zone, one of which began overflowing on Friday, according to an official with the country's Disaster Management Authority. The floods have severely damaged infrastructure, sweeping away a crucial road connecting Kathmandu with Lhasa in Tibet that was frequently used by trekkers and pilgrims.

International aid is beginning to reach the region. On Thursday, the UAE announced a $10 million humanitarian aid package to support critical relief efforts. Dr Tareq Al Amiri, chairman of the UAE Aid Agency, emphasized that the Emirates will continue to lead in disaster response, with an agency team working closely with local authorities and international organizations.

Medical staff at facilities such as Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj are working around the clock to treat the injured. Among the survivors receiving care is Girilal Budhathoki, who lost his wife and child in the disaster, while his brother Newall comforted him amidst the tragedy.
