Ontario Premier Doug Ford has unveiled a bold, blue billboard along the shore near Hamilton, Ontario, firmly rejecting United States President Donald Trump's controversial executive order renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America”. Standing by the water, Ford revealed the baby-blue sign featuring “Lake Ontario” in large white letters, accompanied by the subheading “Now and Always” and repeated in French, Canada’s second official language. Ford explained that the display was created to reaffirm the Great Lake’s name in case President Trump or anyone else forgets, emphasizing that the body of water held that name long before Trump and will continue to do so long after he is gone. The White House did not respond to Al Jazeera’s request for comment.

The stunt comes amid a spiralling trade war between Canada and the US, triggered after President Trump signed an executive order altering how the US federal government refers to the body of water. The move drew criticism from allies, including Vermont Governor Phil Scott, who called the decision petty and disappointing while urging a return to the negotiating table. With Canada ranking as a top trading partner and the primary destination for US exports, trade tensions have sparked nationwide boycotts of US goods and provincial bans on US liquor. Doug Ford, a right-wing populist, has positioned himself as a leading voice for Canadian retaliation.

Since President Trump assumed office for a second term in 2025, he has demanded that Canada cede its sovereignty to become a US state and imposed multiple waves of tariffs. Ford's new sign marks the latest escalation in their ongoing feud, which intensified after trade negotiations collapsed and resulted in US tariffs of 50 percent on $20bn worth of Canadian goods. In response, Ford made defiant remarks on a Toronto radio show, prompting President Trump to fire back on his Truth Social platform by mocking the premier as less impressive than his late brother, the late Toronto Mayor Rob Ford.

This billboard is not Ford's first controversial action against President Trump. Last year, the Ontario government spent $75m on an anti-tariff advertisement featuring the voice of former US President Ronald Reagan, which ultimately led Trump to cancel ongoing trade negotiations in protest. Although Ford later pulled the ad in October, his ongoing clashes with the US administration highlight the deep economic and political friction between the neighbouring nations.
