Ashraf Oqba, Head of the Immunology Department at Ain Shams University, has issued a warning regarding the severe risks associated with untreated lupus. Speaking to Extra News channel, Oqba described lupus as a chronic autoimmune disease where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues, affecting individuals ranging from children to adults.
The impact of this chronic condition extends beyond surface-level issues, potentially damaging vital organs such as the heart and kidneys. Symptoms differ significantly among patients, but common warning signs include extreme fatigue, joint inflammation, facial skin rashes, fever, and hair loss. Because the disease can escalate and harm internal organs, early detection and consistent medical oversight are crucial for minimizing complications.
Regarding diagnosis, Oqba noted that no single test can definitively confirm lupus. Instead, physicians must evaluate multiple factors, combining clinical examinations, patient medical histories, and comprehensive antibody tests to reach a final diagnosis.
Addressing why the condition disproportionately affects women, Oqba pointed to a combination of hormonal and genetic influences. Additionally, environmental triggers and certain medications can activate symptoms in vulnerable individuals.
While lupus can become dangerous if left untreated, Oqba emphasized that proper medical follow-up and treatment effectively manage symptoms and lower complication risks, highlighting the importance of early intervention.
