Rescue operations are facing extreme challenges following a catastrophic glacier collapse in the Himalaya mountains near the border between Nepal and Tibet, which triggered devastating floods and landslides along the Trishuli and Bhotekoshi river systems. The death toll has climbed to at least 734, with authorities reporting more than 3,000 individuals missing, including hundreds of workers at hydropower projects in central Nepal.

According to the Independent Power Producers’ Association, approximately 933 people remain unaccounted for across 11 hydropower project sites and tunnels in the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts. These missing individuals include citizens of Nepal, India, South Korea, and China. At the 216-megawatt Upper Trishuli-1 hydropower project, the Nepali Army has successfully rescued 254 workers, though adverse weather and blocked tunnels continue to hinder operations at sites like the 22MW Chilime Hydropower project. India has also dispatched an 11-member team of medical personnel and tunnel-rescue specialists to assist with aerial assessments.

Local morgues are reportedly running out of space, and Nepal's foreign minister noted that the nation is struggling with a lack of refrigeration to store and identify bodies. Unidentified remains have been distributed to 21 hospitals across different districts for DNA testing and preservation. Meanwhile, Chinese authorities in Gyirong County reported 16 fatalities, while search operations are ongoing using life-monitoring equipment, search dogs, and drones across restricted access zones on the Chinese side of the border.

Nepal's Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai stated that 19,000 security personnel and 16 helicopters have been deployed. Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle estimated the financial losses from the disaster to exceed $4bn. Despite international aid arriving from the UN, the Red Cross Federation, Australia, India, South Korea, and the US, ongoing heavy rains, destroyed bridges, and rugged terrain continue to impede comprehensive relief efforts.
