Authorities in Nepal have issued urgent warnings for further flooding, urging residents in inundated districts to remain on high alert as water levels dangerously rise in the Bhotekoshi River. Emergency flood alerts were dispatched to mobile phones on Sunday morning while dedicated rescue teams worked tirelessly to clear a main highway connecting Kathmandu with one of the regions hardest hit by Wednesday's catastrophic flash flood.

The combined death toll in Nepal and China’s Tibet region has tragically climbed to 750, with more than 3,000 individuals still unaccounted for. Nepal’s disaster agency reported that the death toll within the country has risen to 734, leaving 2,498 people missing. Meanwhile, Chinese authorities confirmed 16 deaths and 546 missing persons, a total that includes over 100 Nepalis alongside individuals from more than a dozen different countries.

Dharam Raj Uprety, chief executive of Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, stated to The Associated Press news agency that these latest warnings came directly after a notice was issued by Chinese authorities to their Nepali counterparts regarding increased water flow upstream. According to the Red Cross, as many as 93,000 people across Nepal have been severely impacted by this ongoing disaster.

In response to the crisis, Nepal officially appealed on Saturday for international financial assistance and specialized rescue support. Requested aid includes heavy-lift drones, DNA testing kits, and body freezer units. Global partners have begun stepping forward with support: the United States and Canada each committed approximately $3.6m in humanitarian assistance, the United Kingdom pledged $6.8m, and the United Nations released $2.5m in emergency funding. Additionally, the European Union promised $2.3m on Friday, while the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies allocated more than $1m and launched a massive emergency appeal targeting $31m. Chinese President Xi Jinping also offered official assistance from Beijing on Friday.
